Harrisburg, PA – Department of Human Services (DHS) Secretary Teresa Miller today recognized and thanked DHS employees who staff Pennsylvania’s hotline for reporting suspected cases of child abuse and neglect for their exceptional contributions and continued sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 74-person ChildLine team has been working remotely since March to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Harrisburg, PA – The Department of Health today shared its weekly update on Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing data and encouraged Pennsylvanians to download the COVID Alert PA app to aid in contact tracing efforts.
“At this time, we have the highest number of contact tracers working to notify close contacts who are identified through the case investigation process,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “We continue to prepare for increases in cases, but we also continue to call on Pennsylvanians do their part and answer the call – answer the call when a case investigator or contact tracer is calling you, answer the call to download the app, answer the call to do your part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Together, we can continue to fight this virus.”

Harrisburg, PA – Today, Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) Secretary Jerry Oleksiak announced that beginning Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, the department will temporarily expand its ability to backdate Unemployment Compensation (UC) claims from six weeks to up to 52 weeks. The change will allow L&I staff to assist claimants who attempted to file UC claims during the first weeks of the pandemic but needed to be assisted and were unable to reach a staff member due to the sudden surge in claims.
“The Department of Labor & Industry is committed to getting every eligible Unemployment Compensation claimant the money they are owed,” said Secretary Oleksiak. “This emergency regulation will help ensure that no eligible claimant will lose out on payments because of the hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Governor Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine today released a weekly status update detailing the state’s mitigation efforts based on the COVID-19 Early Warning Monitoring System Dashboard, highlighting a seven-day case increase of 15,989 cases, statewide percent positivity of 6.9%, and 38 counties with substantial transmission status.
The update includes the following:
- Level of community transmission as a basis for the recommendations for Pre-K to 12 schools to determine instructional models.
- Data on cases among 5-18-year-olds.
- Cases that reported visiting a business among potential locations where exposures may have occurred.
- Updated travel recommendations.

Harrisburg, PA – Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine today announced beginning Saturday, November 7, a drive-thru and indoor testing clinic will be held in the parking lot at the Hillcrest Shopping Center PNC Bank in Westmoreland County to help contain the recent rapid increase in COVID-19 cases.
“Since the beginning of September, we have seen an increase of 2,998 cases in Westmoreland County, which gives us significant cause for concern,” Dr. Levine said. “This testing site will be open to anyone who feels they need a test. It is important that even people with no symptoms who test positive isolate to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Harrisburg, PA – Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine today announced that the department has published a request for applications for entities to conduct collaborative research on COVID-19, focusing on the health impacts and novel treatments of the virus.
“The lessons learned from COVID-19 will inform public health for years, decades and centuries to come,” Dr. Levine said. “There continues to be much to learn about the COVID-19 virus, the health impacts of the virus, what treatments exist, and the usability of those treatments. We look forward to receiving a number of applications from Pennsylvania’s research institutions that are looking to conduct collaborative research to inform public health as we work to produce a healthy Pennsylvania for all.”

Governor Tom Wolf announced that nearly $20 million is now available to assist Pennsylvanians currently experiencing homelessness. The commonwealth received its second allocation of federal COVID-19 Homeless Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG-CV) funds, and the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) has set aside a portion of those funds to be used toward emergency shelter in preparation for the winter months 2020-21.
“As winter quickly approaches, Pennsylvania is bracing for a surge in COVID-19 cases, all while continuing its usual work of providing shelter and services to those who are homeless,” said Gov. Wolf. “As we expect to see an increase in the rate of cases, we are also expecting to see a decrease in the amount of volunteers and resources this winter. This funding will help provide the tools that communities need to protect their residents, providing them safe shelter and preventing the spread of coronavirus further.”

Harrisburg, PA – The Wolf Administration today began distribution of the fourth allotment of COVID-19 antigen test kits provided by the federal government to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified institutions in Elk, Lawrence, Mifflin and Philadelphia counties.
Given its size, Philadelphia will likely receive an additional allotment in week five. Tests will be given to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health for further distribution in its jurisdiction.

Harrisburg, PA – Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar today assured Pennsylvanians that rigorous precautions will be taken at polling places on Nov. 3 to keep voters, poll workers and election officials safe.
“We want voters to feel safe going to the polls on election day to exercise their constitutional right to vote,” Secretary Boockvar said. “In addition to all the precautions that counties are taking, voters should follow common-sense measures, such as wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing at the polls.”

Harrisburg, PA — The Wolf Administration today recognized the work of staff assigned to the Department of Revenue’s Bureau of Imaging and Document Management (BIDM) facility in Harrisburg. Employees who work at this facility are responsible for scanning and processing all mail, paper tax returns, paper checks and claims for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program received by the Department of Revenue.
