Senator Santarsiero Announces $49,405 in State Funds to Rolling Harvest Food Rescue

BUCKS COUNTY – Septiembre 26, 2023 – Senator Steve Santarsiero (D-10) today announced $49,405 in state funds were awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to Rolling Harvest Food Rescue to improve food storage and reduce food waste.

With the funds, provided through the Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant Program, Rolling Harvest will partner with Solly Brothers Farm to purchase a second 10 x 20 walk-in, outdoor refrigerated cooler to increase their safe food storage capacity and to use as a central Food Access Hub for food distribution in the region.

“The work of Rolling Harvest Food Rescue is critical to combatting food insecurity that affects too many individuals and families in Bucks County,” said Senator Santarsiero.  “Through partnerships with local farms, Rolling Harvest helps reduce food waste and provide nutritious, local produce to those in need.  I proudly supported this grant to increase the organization’s capacity to store thousands of pounds of fresh produce for community members in need.”

“On behalf of all of us with Rolling Harvest Food Rescue, please accept our sincere appreciation in helping us secure the recent $50,000 PA DEP Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant, said Cathy Snyder, Founder and Executive Director of Rolling Harvest Food Rescue. “One of the main barriers to being able to rescue and redistribute perfectly wholesome, healthy surplus food has always been a lack of available cold storage in Bucks County, and beyond. This grant helps remove that barrier by providing us with a new, large cooler facility in a central location, increasing our food recovery efforts with local farmers, food producers, and food retailers to benefit all of our neighbors in need struggling with food insecurity and lacking access to nutrition. Cold food storage means this precious and highly perishable food does not have to be left in the fields or sent to landfills.”

Rolling Harvest Food Rescue connects farmers with food pantries to eliminate waste and meet local demand. The organization works to increase access to donated fresh produce and other healthy foods to area hunger-relief sites that serve the at-risk, food-insecure population by providing local farmers and food producers with free, effective delivery and distribution of their surplus.  Additional information about Rolling Harvest Food Rescue can be found on their website.

Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant funds are used for the procurement of eligible equipment to reduce food waste disposal from food retailers, wholesalers, agriculture organizations, farms and cooperatives by repurposing and redistributing apparently safe and wholesome foods to Commonwealth nonprofits that provide food to segments of the public.

Senator Santarsiero Secures $50,000 to Assist Solebury Township with Carversville Flood Control

BUCKS COUNTY – Noviembre 2, 2022 − State Senator Steve Santarsiero (D-10) has announced $50,000 in state funds for Solebury Township to assist with a project to mitigate future flooding issues in Carversville.

“Carversville Village has experienced significant flooding events over the years, but was hit especially hard during Hurricane Ida,” said Senator Santarsiero.  “After touring the damage and speaking with township staff, Solebury Township shared a plan for dredging and excavating part of the stream, which will help control future flooding from storms.  As we continue to see more severe weather from climate change, it is more important than ever that we support our communities with flood control projects like the one Solebury Township is implementing.”

The funding will be used to clean the culvert and dredge parts of the stream, a tributary to Paunnacussing Creek, at Wismer Road and Carversville Road.  It will include the removal of debris from the culvert and the use of excavation equipment for bulk excavation upstream.  This is the first phase of a larger project that includes stream restoration along the Paunnacussing Creek.

“We’ve been working on many fronts since the destruction to Carversville caused by Ida in Septiembre of 2021 to get funding to address the long-term flooding risks faced by our residents,” said Solebury Township Board of Supervisors Chair Mark Baum Baicker.  “Senator Santarsiero was able to get us these critical funds for badly-needed culvert dredging. Not only is that work so important on its own but it also seems to have created momentum toward getting us even more help, potentially on the federal level, for projects to shore up the banks of the Paunnacussing Creek through Carversville down to the Delaware River to mitigate future disasters.”

Santarsiero.  “Dating back to when I was a Lower Makefield Township Supervisor more than a dozen years ago, I have advocated for funding to support the important work our police do on a daily basis to keep our community safe.  When Yardley Borough Police Department identified the need to replace aging vehicles, but lacked the funding to do so, I was happy to work with the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to secure funds to cover the costs.”

Chief Joseph Kelly expressed gratitude for the funds saying, “The Yardley Borough Police Department is fortunate to have received this grant.  At a time when local governments are facing financial challenges, the funds supplied via the DCED, with the incredible support of Sen. Senator Santarsiero first announced the availability of $200 million in this year’s budget to address student mental health and school safety during an Agosto 18th press conference in Lower Makefield Township where he was joined by Mark Barden, Founder and CEO of Sandy Hook Promise, a non-profit group based in Newtown, Connecticut, led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The program is based on Senator Santarsiero’s Senate Bill 1263, the Safety and Violence Education (SAVE) Students Act, which would require schools to implement at least one hour, or a standard class period, per year of suicide prevention training, violence prevention training, and social inclusion training to students in grades six through twelve. Sandy Hook Promise advocates across the country for this training to be mandatory.

“As a society, we have an obligation to support our children and keep them safe,” Senator Santarsiero said during the Agosto event.  “To do that, we must focus on mental health issues in our schools.  Every district across the Commonwealth should be taking advantage of this funding and implementing evidence-based programs to effectively teach youth and adults how to prevent school violence, shootings, and other harmful acts.”

Senator Santarsiero emphasized that while this program funding is important, there is still work to be done.

“We really do need to have these programs across the Commonwealth, in every school.  I’d like to see a uniform approach spearheaded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, which is why passing SB 1263 is still important,” he said.

Senator Santarsiero, Representative Davis Announce $255,000 for Bristol Township Watershed Restoration

BUCKS COUNTY  Septiembre 23, 2022 – State Senator Steve Santarsiero (D-10) and State Representative Tina Davis (D-141) announced today that Bristol Township will receive $255,000 in state funding for a watershed restoration project.

The project will improve the existing swales along Mill Creek near Plumbridge Drive in the township, helping to combat erosion of the existing swales and prevent the flow of sediment into the creek.

“Vegetated bioswales are an environmentally-friendly way to manage stormwater runoff and protect water quality in our local creeks,” said Sen. Santarsiero.  “Solutions like what Bristol Township is implementing here will preserve our natural resources while strengthening our infrastructure to combat increasingly severe weather.”

Bristol Township Manager Randee Elton described the project, noting, “With this funding, the Township has the opportunity to implement stormwater projects in an effort to reduce sediment in our waterways.  The focus area is along the wooded section of Mill Creek adjacent to the Plumbridge Drive. The existing swales exhibit signs of severe erosion occurring and lacks vegetation which allows sediment to flow directly into Mill Creek. Senator Santarsiero Announces $188,437 in State Funds to Support Local Police Departments

BUCKS COUNTY – Diciembre 8, 2021 − State Senator Steve Santarsiero (D-10) announced four local police departments will receive a total of $188,437 in state funding through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).  The breakdown of awards is as follows:

  • Central Bucks Regional Police Department: $59,597
  • Solebury Township: $57,940
  • Lower Makefield Township: $36,000
  • New Britain Township: $34,900

“Keeping our communities safe requires ensuring our local police have adequate resources to do their jobs,” said Sen. Santarsiero.  “Each of our municipal and area police departments show incredible dedication to protecting the community, which is why I am so pleased to advocate for these awards to support our police as they serve residents across my district.”

The funding for Central Bucks Regional Police Department will be used to build a new evidence impound yard.  Following several security breaches at their previous impound yard on the Doylestown Borough public works site, Central Bucks Regional Police Department began using a neighboring police department’s facility to temporarily house evidence.  With the addition of the evidence impound yard, the department will be able to apply to become a state accredited entity.

“The new yard and accompanying security features will bolster the ability of Central Bucks Regional Police Department to properly secure evidence and maintain chain of custody, which is vital to fair and timely prosecution in criminal matters,” said Sen. Santarsiero.

“This project will allow CBRPD to negate ongoing criminal activity and protection of evidentiary materials at the police impound yard,” said Central Bucks Regional Police Chief Karl Knott. “The new impound yard will allow for the final step in becoming a PA Accredited Law Enforcement Agency by meeting PLEAC standards on evidence integrity and chain of custody.”

Solebury Township will be using the funds to enhance their technological capabilities and improve their police department records management system.

“Technology is an incredible aid to support the work of our police,” said Sen. Santarsiero.  “Upgrading the technology and record management system used by Solebury Township Police Department will streamline the system and improve efficiency for the department.”

“This is great news for Solebury Township and the Police Department,” said Solebury Township Police Chief Dominick Bellizzie. “We are currently using an antiquated system with limited support and it will be great for the Department to move to a state-of-the-art records management system. This will be a tremendous asset.”

Lower Makefield Township Police Department will use the awarded funds to implement innovative training for officers on a variety of subjects.

“Continued and diversified training of police officers ensures our officers have the knowledge and ability to effectively diffuse challenging situations,” said Sen. Santarsiero. “These funds will help the Lower Makefield Township Police Department implement trainings related to bias policing, officer’s duty to intervene, use of force and how to effectively work with mentally ill individuals, helping to better serve the community.”

Lower Makefield Township Police Chief Kenneth Coluzzi believes, “This grant will help foster police community trust and continue to build upon the high standards of our department.”

The funds for New Britain Township will help the police department fulfill its quest to become an accredited law enforcement agency and develop new policies for community policing.

“Our police are constantly working to protect us and ensure best practices and policies are used when interacting with the community,” said Sen. Santarsiero.  “New Britain Township police officers will be better able to serve the community as they build on their work and develop new, safe ways of resolving issues that arise.”

“As a new chief I recognize the importance of innovative and evidence based policing initiatives such as policy development and accreditation,” said New Britain Township Police Chief Richard Clowser.  “This grant will help New Britain Township Police Department professionalize their services and increase our accountability to the New Britain Township Community.  We are excited to join the over 134 professional law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania in achieving Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation.”
