It was my pleasure to recognize the summer interns in my district offices on the Senate floor. Thank you to Emily Silverman of Newtown, Zach Kirk of Lower Makefield, Michael Gunden of Hilltown, and Macella Molenari of Doylestown, for making the trip to Harrisburg, and for all your good work helping our community.

Supporting Military Families

Signed into law on July 1st, the PA GI Bill, or Military Family Education Program, is the first program of its kind in the nation.

Military Family Education ProgramUnder the PA GI Bill, Pennsylvania National Guard members who commit to an additional six years of service can receive five years of higher education benefits for their spouses and children. The program will provide for 10 semesters of tuition-free education for family member(s). The benefit must be used at a Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) approved educational institution, and at the tuition rate set by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). The PA GI bill could benefit up to 8,000 military family members.

To learn more about the PA GI Bill or to see if you’re eligible for benefits, visit the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) link provided.

Update from Senate District 10

Commuter Tax Credit Press Conference

Senator Santarsiero with Representative Warren (D-31) at a press conference near the Scudder Falls Toll Bridge interchange in Lower Makefield

At the interchange of the Scudder Falls Toll Bridge in Lower Makefield, Representative Perry Warren (D-31) and I called for action on our bills (SB 451 and HB 329) that would provide a commuter tax credit to working families and businesses across southeastern Pennsylvania who regularly pay tolls to maintain our roads and bridges, covering 50% of a taxpayer’s toll-related expenses for the taxable year, up to $500.

These bills are based on the legislation that I first proposed in 2012 when I was in the state House. At that time, the Delaware River Join Toll Bridge Commission first announced that it would be tolling the new Scudder Falls Bridge when completed. Now that the tolling of the new bridge has begun — and other tolls such as those on the Pennsylvania Turnpike keep increasing — it’s time to get this passed.

For many decades, Bucks County Playhouse has been a pillar of the entertainment scene in our region and I was happy to be able to celebrate their many achievements with staff and supporters. You can visit the New Hope Historical Society’s exhibit featuring a collection of memorabilia celebrating 80 years of Bucks County Playhouse, now through Labor Day at the Parry Mansion.

I was pleased to welcome Luke and Skyler, recent graduates from Goodnoe Elementary School in Newtown and two of the recipients of my office's Good Citizenship Award, along with Principal Nicole Crawford, to my office. The Good Citizenship Award goes beyond academic achievement, instead honoring the exemplary character and leadership abilities of the chosen recipients. As a former teacher, I understand that these qualities are just as important in shaping the future of any student. Keep up the great work, Luke and Skyler, and best of luck in middle school!
