Update from Harrisburg

Kayden’s Law

Senator Santarsiero with colleagues from the state Senate and House at the Senate Democratic Policy Committee Hearing on SB 868, or Kayden’s Law

I’ve been honored to work closely with the family of seven-year-old Kayden Mancuso, who was killed during a court-mandated unsupervised visit with her biological father last August. In October, the Senate Democratic Policy Committee held a hearing on SB 868, also known as Kayden’s Law, which would provide greater legal protections to children in the family court system.

A child’s safety is too often overlooked in custody and visitation mandates, instead focusing primarily on parental rights. Pennsylvania must do more to protect the well-being of children involved in custody disputes. Kayden’s Law is that next step.

I want to thank Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha (BAPS), for visiting me in Harrisburg before the celebration of Diwali, and for sharing the organization’s ongoing efforts of raising awareness about the Hindu American community and experience.

It was a very special day at the state capital for Bucks County and the Pennsbury community because not one, but two teams were celebrating championship victories. It was my honor to recognize the Pennsbury Athletic Association 8U and 12U teams on the floor of the Senate for their Cal Ripken World Series and Keystone Cup State Championship wins, respectively.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education announced $7.2 million in Safe Schools Targeted Grants, awarded to schools to prevent and reduce violent incidents. The grants are used to purchase safety and security-related equipment, and grants can be used to fund training for staff and police officers.

It was a pleasure to join Newtown Brewing Company for its grand opening. I want to wish owners Gregg and Sara Bonstein all the best as they join a flourishing Newtown business community. Whether you enjoy drinking lagers, IPAs, Belgians, wheat beers, stouts, pale ales, or wine, come out and welcome our newest family-owned business to the community.

Morrisville Library Renovations

Library

Through the award of a Keystone Grant totaling $52,500, Morrisville Free Library will be moving forward on a project to replace the slate roof of the library’s 108-year-old building.

Morrisville Free Library is one of 19 public libraries across 12 counties in Pennsylvania that have been awarded $3.25 million in Keystone Grants to use toward improving physical facilities. Keystone Grants are funded through the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund.

With this generous grant, Morrisville Free Library can continue to provide invaluable resources to our community.

Carbon Countdown Clock, Pennsylvania’s Call to Action

Carbon Countdown Clock

If we want to keep global warming under 2 degrees Celsius, there is only a finite amount of carbon pollution Earth can emit. The amount can be thought of as a fixed budget amount, or quota.

I dedicated a climate page on my website that features a Carbon Countdown Clock, which tracks the time we have left until that budget is depleted. The clock ultimately serves as a reminder to all Pennsylvanians that we have a responsibility to address climate change. The page also highlights legislative steps I’ve taken to address climate change and reverse man-made damage done to the planet.
