Update from Harrisburg

Passing the Budget

The budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year passed on time. Although this budget is far from perfect, we were able to increase investments in public education by about $160 million, which will always be a top priority for me. Other highlights of the budget included a Farm Bill that will support Pennsylvania’s agricultural community, additional funding for victims of domestic violence, and a G.I. Bill for Pennsylvania National Guardsmen and their families—the first of its kind at the state level. The fight continues for environmental funding, raising the minimum wage, and protecting Pennsylvanians in need of general assistance, but these are issues I will not be giving up on.

Addressing Eating Disorders

I worked with colleagues, healthcare professionals, and advocates in writing SB 324, legislation I introduced that would require schools annually to supply educational information to parents of children in grades 5 through 12 on the harmful and potentially fatal effects of eating disorders. SB 324 would provide parents the tools to make informed decisions about their child’s health and well-being.

It was a pleasure to have the Pennsbury Ultimate Frisbee Team as my guests in Harrisburg after their win in the Pennsylvania State Tournament. As one of the fastest growing sports in the world, it's great to see a local team bring home this win!

Update from Senate District 10

Senator Santarsiero with Representative Ullman
Senator Santarsiero speaking with residents at the Senior Expo in Levittown

I want to thank everyone who came out and made our first Senior Expo such a success! More than 50 vendors and community agencies were in attendance to share information and services with hundreds of our local seniors and their families. A special thank you to Levittown Fire Company #1 for opening up their hall for us, and Independence Blue Cross, UPMC, ShopRite of Yardley, Giant of Levittown, Acme of Levittown, and Weis Markets for sponsoring this event. This Senior Expo was just one of many I plan to hold throughout our community.

I’ve been to many ribbon cuttings over the years to mark the openings of new businesses in our community. Each has been an occasion for celebration. So, to celebrate my district office opening with the Newtown Business Association (NBA) was a truly special moment for me. Thank you to all the residents, officials, business owners, and community organizations who made my district office open house such a fun time. This office is here to serve you.

Few landmarks highlight the rich culture and history of Bucks County quite like The County Theater in Doylestown Borough. I was proud to stand alongside Rep. Wendy Ullman (D-143), County Theater Director John Toner, Mayor Ron Strouse, and other local officials to announce the $64,500 in grant funding from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission that will go toward renovations, including an expansion project of a new auditorium, lobby, and first-floor restrooms.

I joined my friends at BAPS Charities for their annual walk to bring awareness to important causes in our community. This year’s beneficiaries were The Nature Conservancy, Pennsylvania Chapter and Warrington Cares. This year, BAPS Charities will hold 70 such walks across the country and plant 361,000 trees to promote environmental stewardship.

The first span of the new Scudder Falls Toll Bridge opened on July 10th

A series of lane closures, traffic shifts, and interchange ramp openings and ramp detours will be implemented the next five weeks to fully bring the first completed span of the new Scudder Falls Toll Bridge and adjoining I-295 approaches into a new temporary alignment.

This transitional period of travel changes began this week and will wrap up on or about August 15. This phased-in plan to open the new bridge will impact I-295 commuters and motorists using the bridge’s flanking interchanges in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
